There is no where else on earth where the intersection of art and science is more active than Los Angeles. It's as if people come to Los Angeles to use fiction and narrative structure in order to prototype the future. And it's here in Los Angeles where major institutes, labs, manufacturers and tinkerers use those out-there ideas to produce real-world technology.
Immigrant pioneers or movie pioneers, water engineers or social engineers, architects or rocket scientists, authors of the edge of civilization or star-making machinists of pop culture – Los Angeles is a city built on dreams, inhabited by dreamers who dream still more of futures as yet unwritten.
The imagined futures presentS: the what if? EVENTS series
In collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences and its Science and Entertainment Exchange, The Imagined Futures hosts quarterly events exploring the relationship between Hollywood and the scientific community, and the often unexpected ways in which they inspire, promote and respond to each other. Often with cocktails in hand, the What If? Event series will bring together the talent of Hollywood's creative class alongside the scientists working on the technology and theories underlying the innovative narratives of film and television.
One Night To Save The World
The National Academies of Science, A Hundred Years, and Imagined Futures are hosting One Night to Save the World, round two of our event series wherein science, entertainment, business, and policy converge to summon the citizens of Los Angeles to conjure a daringly optimistic future. For our next topic, we are imagining an overpopulated world.
Join us as a group of brilliant panelists explore the latest in science and policy that very well might just save the world ... or at least motivate us to try. Taking inspiration from science and science fiction, acclaimed screenwriters Stephany Folsom (Toy Story 4) and Doing Jung (Star Trek: Beyond) will transform these big ideas into stories fit for the big screen.
Panelists include Vince Bertoni, Director of the Los Angeles Department of City Planning, the largest city planning department in the nation; Dr. Ari Novy, the Chief Scientist at the Leichtag Foundation in Encinitas, California; Nick Halla the Chief Strategy Officer and the first employee of Impossible Foods, a startup that wants to transform the global food system by inventing better ways to make the food we love; Karthick Ramakrishnan, professor of public policy and political science at the University of California, Riverside and founding director of the Center for Social Innovation; Stephany Folsom, writer, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and Pixar’s Toy Story 4; Doug Jung, writer/producer known for Star Trek: Beyond, The Cloverfield Paradox, and Confidence; Dr. Brian Wolshon, Ph.D. P.E., PTOE, is the Edward A. and Karen Wax Schmitt Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at Louisiana State University and the founding Director of the U.S. DOT-sponsored Gulf Coast Research Center for Evacuation and Transportation Resiliency, Dr. Andrew Rader is an aerospace engineer and author of the books Rocket Science (2017), Mars Rover Rescue (2016), Epic Space Adventure (2015), and Leaving Earth (2013); Dr. Kaveh Hosseini, Hyperloop One’s Lead Aerodynamicist and the creator of the fuselage of the first full-scale Hyperloop pod XP-1; Courtney Hohne, leader of marketing and communications at X: The Moonshot Factory; and Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam is a Cooperative Extension Specialist in the field of Animal Genomics and Biotechnology in the Department of Animal Science at University of California, Davis.
What if we build la's future - live and in cardboard?
The Imagined Futures Event will be a real-time future building game to explore the Future-- in Los Angeles-- as developed, constructed, destroyed and re-built in collaboration with all guests. With expert scientists on hand, as well as storytellers and artists, attendees will physically adapt a cardboard model of Los Angeles to reflect a prediction to the future. Other guests will then iterate, tinker with, or create a new potentiality, represented in the model and described through the art and narrative being created.
The Imagined Future Los Angeles (the iterated cardboard future vision of Los Angeles) will live on from event to event, adapting every time, creating new overlapping fantastic futures. For the first event, two iterations will be created: one with Inner City Arts and one with the Exchange members.
These events will be experiments in creating the fully realized IF Galleries and Museum.

- Tahir Hemphill came of age in 1980s New York, practicing various elements of hip hop culture and exploring cyberspace from a basement in Queens with a dial-up modem and Commodore 128. Hemphill is an award-winning advertising creative and multimedia artist, working across disciplines to find productive tension between art and technology. He explores community resilience through collaboration and research, influenced by scientific work that pushes investigation to artistic limits and art that pushes toward scientific method.
- Joaquín (Quim) Madrenas has published more than 150 publications in immunology and medicine and is engaged in public education and community outreach. Dr. Madrenas worked as Executive Director of the CIHR Human Immunology Network and at McGill University as Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Founding Director of the Microbiome and Disease Tolerance Center. He is currently the CSO at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and featured recently at TEDxMontreal.
- Maja Matarić is a Professor and the Chan Soon-Shiong Chair in the Computer Science Department, Neuroscience Program, and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California (USC); Founding Director of the USC Robotics and Autonomous Systems Center; Co-Director of the USC Robotics Research Lab; Vice Dean for Research in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering; and Founder and CSO of Embodied, Inc.
- Zach McKinney is the CSO and co-founder of Spinal Singularity, a medical device start-up developing advanced technologies for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders. Dr. McKinney co-founded Spinal Singularity while completing his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at UCLA. He has been an avid observer and active participant in the field of human–machine interfacing and remains committed to the development and implementation of technologies for human rehabilitation and augmentation.
- Philip Ross has exhibited work at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, MoMA, and the Museum of Jurassic Technology. As a bioengineering scholar at Stanford University, he is working to develop an internet of biological things. He is co-founder and CTO of MycoWorks, a start-up that turns mycelium into building bricks and leather—where he is poised to revolutionize the materials industry with his carbon-neutral, chemical-free, organic, biodegradable, and fully sustainable designs.
- C. Alex Young is a NASA astrophysicist studying space weather in our solar system. Dr. Young is the Associate Director in the Heliophysics Science Division at the Goddard Space Flight Center and head of the Heliophysics Education Consortium. He oversees and coordinates education and public outreach for the Heliophysics Division, works as a liaison to the NASA Offices of Education and Communication, and promotes and supports the research of division scientists.

- Randii R. Wessen is the Lead Study Architect for JPL’s Innovation Foundry’s Architecture-Team. Dr. Wesson has worked on planetary missions including Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, and Mars Exploration Rovers. Asteroid 31664 (Randiiwessen) is named in his honor.
- Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides is a Founding Astronaut on Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo. Mrs. Whitesides is also the co-creator of Yuri’s Night, a world-wide space celebration, and has dived to hydrothermal vents for the 3D IMAX documentary “Aliens of the Deep”.
- Alvin Yew is the Program Manager for NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC). Dr. Yew has engineered hardware for several spaceflight missions, directed research on small satellite sensors and actuators, and worked in Antarctica to upgrade NASA’s communications network.
